Desceptive Description November 30, 2008 J. S. Burcher (Edmond, OK) Sylvania's first bullet of features is its "Optional 4 on/off Settings" which led me to believe that I could set up to 4 programmed times during either 7 day, 5 day, or 2 day (weekend) cycle and it would turn the lights on/off during those times. I thought it would be nice to turn the xmas lights on off at night and also on/off in the morning so I could see them on my way to work. Program 1 was set for the night and everything went perfectly - Program 2 was set for the AM and it failed to turn on. After reading others reviews, and verified by my own experience, it seems that the 4 programmed timers only work 1 at a time and do not automatically switch to the other programms. You have to go to each timer and switch to the next programmed timer else nothing will happen. Bottom line to me is it's only good for 1 program setting unless you want to go around changing which program it is running. Makes no sense to me - whole reason for a timer is so I don't have to go around to each outlet at night, otherwise I could plug/unplug lights.
Excellent compact outdoor circuit timer May 13, 2008 Kevin M. Shaw (Oak Ridge, TN) As advertized, this product was a snap to install and program. Rather than a light sensor, this device uses smart technology to turn circuits on at the "time" of dusk and has multiple settings for time out. The additional allways on circuit is most useful for outdoor electrical tools like edgers and leaf blowers. I am very pleased with my purchase.
Almost burned down my garage December 13, 2007 Julie Silverman (Minneapolis, MN USA) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
I bought this unit last December to turn on and off the Christmas lights on the south side of my house. Using deck screws I mounted it on the side of my attached garage adjacent to a newly installed outdoor GFI outlet. The location is protected from direct exposure to the elements and accidental damage from humans, animals, lawn mowers, etc. Imagine my horror when I got home from work yesterday and discovered a 2' x 4' big black charred crater in the cedar siding of my garage. The Sylvania timer was melted from the inside (obviously the origin of the combustion) and two feet of attached extension cord was melted to the side of the garage. The GFI outlet was tripped. Thank god! If not for the GFI cutting power to the timer, this unit most likely would have burned down my garage (and taken part of the house with it). Of course my first thoughts turned to operator error. Did I overload the unit by plugging in too many amps? Were the extension cord or the one string of star lights plugged into it damaged or old? Nope. All items (including the timer) were less than one year old. Plus, this year we replaced nearly 30% of our Xmas lights with LEDs... so we were pulling much less power through it. Certainly less than 10 Amps (it's rated for 15 Amps). My advice? Don't install this thing anywhere near your house, or plug anything into it that you can't afford to replace.
Should have stayed with Intermatic September 15, 2007 D. Anderson (Pittsburgh, PA United States) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I had purchased the Sylvania SA210 4-program timer as a replacement for my old Intermatic HB88RC 4-program timer that had finally given up the ghost after 8 years of faithfully weathering the elements. I spent a frustating week trying to program the timer for 4 separate events over both weekends and weekdays before finally reading the Amazon reviews and discovering that others have been similarly mistaken. This timer is not capable of being programmed for separate events outside the single time period you select (weekends, week days or all week). This fact is not listed in either the product description or the instruction sheet provided.
Nice little timer for the money June 15, 2007 Gadget Tech (Apple Valley, MN USA) 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
I use this for timing holiday lights in the winter and a pond pump in the summer. BTW, programming instructions may be found at: http://www.hardwareinnovations.com/pdf/SA_210_IB61056_33.pdf
