Amazon.com Product Description
The TiVo Series2 DT does something that only DirecTV TiVo users have enjoyed up till now--the ability to record two shows at once. This dual-tuner (DT) TiVo Series2 is the first standalone DVR that's optimized for households with cable television. Now, you'll never have to miss any of your favorite shows--even if they're on at the same time. It also offers the same entertainment services as other TiVo Series2 DVRs, including digital music, digital photos, remote scheduling, and hassle-free favorites recording. All this and the famed luxury of being able to pause and view instant replays of live television, too. TiVo DVRs record television programming directly to an onboard digital ATA/IDE hard drive, eliminating the hassles of videotape (imprecise tape searching, head cleaning, steadily degrading picture, fuzzy sound, etc.).

This TiVo Series2 DT model (TCD649080) offers an 80-hour recording capacity. It offers the ability to simultaneously record programming from two basic cable channels, or one basic cable channel and one digital cable channel. It also includes built-in Ethernet and USB ports, making it easier than ever to add the TiVo box to your home network. This enables you to take advantage of the TivoToGo feature, which allows you to transfer programs from the TiVo box to a Windows-based desktop or laptop PC so you can watch your favorite programs on the go or while others are watching live or recorded programing on the TV.

The Series2 has a USB port and an Ethernet connection, offering users with home networks the ability to stream photos and music to their TiVo, or send programs from one TiVo to another. This connectivity also lets TiVo subscribers access exciting entertainment services through the TiVo Home Media Features, which consists of the TiVo Digital Music Player, TiVo Digital Photo Viewer, and Multi-Room Viewing.

The TiVo Digital Music Player lets you enjoy your computer's MP3 collection through your home entertainment sound system. Access and control your entire digital music collection via your TV; shuffle your music library by artist, album, or type of music; and create a custom playlist on your computer or use third-party software to develop playlists for every mood.

The TiVo Digital Photo Viewer accesses digital photos stored on your computer and showcases them on your TV. View photo albums and slideshows on your TV screen, easily navigate, search, and view your computer's entire digital photo library, play and control slideshows of photo albums, and use the remote control to select and view individual photos.

TiVo's Series2 DVR allows users to view photos and listen to music stored on their computer or other peripheral device.

With the Multi-Room Viewing feature, users can pause live TV and resume viewing in another room.

Multi-Room Viewing is designed for households with two Series2 DVRs and allows you to record a show on one DVR and send it to another if your kids are watching in the living room, say, and you're watching in the bedroom. You can also start a program on one DVR and pick up where you left off on your other DVR, as well as access the Now Playing list of a connected Series2 DVR at any time.

You can also find and schedule recordings even when you're away from home. With Online Scheduling, you'll have the freedom to schedule programs from anywhere you have a computer with an Internet connection. Just sign in to TiVo Central Online to access the same recording options you have at home. Broadband connected Series2 subscribers can also view both their own photo slideshows and those shared by friends with Yahoo! Photos, and check local weather and traffic from Yahoo!. Additionally, subscribers can browse and buy movie tickets from Fandango, discover new music on Live365, and listen to entertaining podcasts.

The Series2 DVR is compatible with virtually every television available. It also works with VCRs, TV antennas, cable systems, and satellite systems. A patented universal remote control simplifies program recording and controls multiple TiVos within the home (2 devices can share your existing phone line). Connections include: 3 video inputs and outputs (S-video, composite-video, and RF coaxial), 1 set of stereo RCA analog audio inputs, and 2 sets of stereo audio outputs.

TiVo service requires a monthly subscription fee; see tivo.com for current rates. Other benefits of TiVo service include but are by no means limited to: Season Pass (TiVo automatically finds and records every episode of a series all season long, even if the network schedule changes), WishList (TiVo finds and records programs that feature your favorite actor, director, team, or even topic), Smart Recording (TiVo detects line-up changes for you and suggests programs to match your interests, if desired), and Showcases (exclusive entertainment plus recording shortcuts from some of the most popular networks on TV). You can even train TiVo to autorecord more shows you'll love when you use the Thumbs Up and Thumbs Down buttons on the supplied remote. Parental controls let you lock channels or set ratings limits based on content.

Customer Reviews:
1 out of 5 stars DirecTv & Tivo experience   September 5, 2010
Andrew (Austin)
" It also works with VCRs, TV antennas, cable systems, and satellite systems" -- LIE!

I currently have a DirecTv HD-DVR that I'm quite happy with. I can record a show from my android phone. I can watch my recorded shows on my computer (as long as I'm connected to my network). It connects to my computer files for video and audio, so all in all I'm pleased. I did't want to order a new one because DirecTV makes you renew a two year contract and charges for the installation. So since this Tivo alleged to do the same things, I thought I'd go this route.

Then I saw this: Record two basic cable channels, or one basic and one digital cable channel, at once. I read that and wasn't quite sure if it would work with my DirecTv subscription. I wanted this Tivo for the bedroom since I have no HD there and no DVR. I called their customer service and was assured by TWO reps that this would work fine with my DirecTv. One of the reps even went as far as getting the model number of my standard DirecTv receiver and he assured me that this would work without a hitch.

I get this receiver and do the install. The install was very easy to do. It looked daunting because there are a lot of wires to connect. But the instructions were clear and easy to follow, I'll give it that. I tried to connect it to a Belkin wireless usb stick I had but it wouldn't work with it. So I either needed to run a hardwire from the my DSL modem or needed to purchase a $50 wireless USB that was compatible. I opted just to plug it into my phone and forego the networking. Once the wiring was done, it took over an hour to download all the channels, schedules, etc. After that hour was up, it presented me with a giant list of stations that it wanted to know if I received. So had to pull out my 250+ channel guide and select everything I received. When that was done, it showed duplicate channels I hadn't selected. Ex, 209 ESPN, 209 ESPNHD, etc. But it also didn't pick up or let me add channels that I do have, like the DirecTv mix channels and special programming (like all the tennis channels during slams). I could tune into these channels, but they just don't show up on the guide. Ok, not such a huge deal. I find a station and start recording. I wanted to watch one tennis match and record another.

That's when things got bad. I could only watch and record one thing at a time. I couldn't even record and watch a recorded program (I recorded a few minutes of one thing, then recorded something else and tried to watch the previously recorded show and couldn't do it). I would get a warning stating that I either needed to stop recording to change stations or just don't change stations. That's a deal breaker, ladies!

I called customer service for troubleshooting and we went through the whole install process again. Finally after about 30 minutes on the phone, the rep had a moment of brilliance and said, "oh, since direcTv is all digital, you can't use all the functionality of this tuner, sorry." My experience with their customer service is that they are clueless.

So, I'm packaging this Tivo back up and sending back to Amazon and cancelling my subscription to Tivo. There's a 30 day trial so should not be an issue to cancel. I will post an update if it is.

If you've never owned a dvr, this might not be a big deal to you. But for those who've used DVRs in the past, it will probably grate your nerves. You'll need an additional remote, you'll have a ton of wires everywhere, will waste a day setting it up, have a guide that is pretty useless and well, you'll probably not be too impressed.

I'm not sure how this will work for those who do not have DirecTV, but since everything is going digital now, I doubt it will be fully functional with any provider. The problem is that Tivo expects your provider to have both digital and analog signals. The cost of this and $129/year isn't worth the headaches. In the long run, it will be cheaper just to go with my provider's equipment. I can see now why Tivo is loosing so many subscribers.

1 out of 5 stars Not for OTA users   September 4, 2010

It is obsolete piece and requires paid subscription - the little thing I have overlooked. For just a little more you can get DVR with free OTA (Over the air) everything - for free. This one will go directly to a landfill. Without the activation it even can't be used as a "VCR". Piece of junk.

1 out of 5 stars Tivo doesn't stand behind their product and the warranty is worthless.   September 3, 2010

Don't purchase the extended warranty. I purchased a 3 year extended warranty and my tivo broke after 8 months. We put up with the initial Tivo even though it would not record voice on both turners at the same time like advertised, but when the network card went out, we thought we would get it serviced. The network card went bad, so they sent me another unit, which had a hard drive failure within one day. I got a second exchange and was told my extended warranty would not cover the replacement unit and is void after the 1st exchange.

Brandon the customer service person was no help at all. I will never buy anything with a tivo logo again.

5 out of 5 stars Tivo Deal   August 23, 2010

Very happy with the item, the ease of set up, and the quality of Tivo and Amazon. Although I chose the free shipping; I was not pleased with the way they dropped it off on my front sidewalk without ringing the bell. Anyone walking by could have swiped it.
